Frequently Asked Questions

A brain injury is damage to the brain that can affect how a patient thinks, moves, acts and feels.  No two brain injuries are the same; the effects of the injury are complex and can vary from mild to severe. There are two main categories of brain injury:

Traumatic injuries are caused by an external force. Common causes are falls and motor vehicle accidents

Non-traumatic injuries are caused by internal factors.  Common causes are lack of oxygen and brain tumors.

Yes! We understand how important it is for families to be together during this time. A parent or caregiver can stay overnight in our comfortable, family-friendly rooms, so you can be there for your child and feel supported throughout their stay.

Any person who is experiencing a change in how they are moving, thinking, acting, speaking and/or eating can benefit from inpatient rehabilitation.  Even those with a severe change in their level of consciousness (i.e. Vegetative state) can benefit from inpatient rehabilitation

A child with a brain injury will receive medical and nursing care as well as rehabilitation services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and feeding therapy, recreational therapy, nutrition management, and respiratory management as needed.

A typical day involves 3-6 hours of therapy as well as structured activities tailored to each patient during breaks.  The length of stay in the hospital will vary depending on the complexity of the injury and the patient’s individual progress.

A Positive Environment Goes a Long Way

It is every parent’s worst nightmare; receiving a call that your child has been in an accident. Unfortunately, Edward (EJ)’s parents lived through this nightmare when they received a call that their son had a drowning incident in a pool. EJ, then a two-year-old boy, immediately was rushed into emergency care that saved his life but he needed somewhere to recover and regain his age-appropriate abilities. Destiney, EJ’s mother, was referred to Weisman Children’s for the next step in EJ’s care and she happily admits that her experience far exceeded her original expectations.
