Pediatric FND and Pain Management in New Jersey

Care That Addresses More Than Pain—It Empowers Families Too

Neurological symptoms and pain can get in the way of the things kids love — running, playing, learning, and just being themselves. At Weisman Children’s, we focus on helping children feel better, move more easily, and enjoy daily life again, with our pediatric Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and pain management services in New Jersey.

We look at the full picture: identifying the barriers, how they affect your child’s day, and what they need to overcome them. Then, we build a treatment plan that helps them grow stronger and feel more confident, while ensuring your child is supported at every step.

Caring for Your Child. Supporting Your Family.

We know that when your child is struggling with physical symptoms, your whole family feels it. That’s why we care for both the child and the people who love them. We explain every step, listen closely, and walk the journey with you.

Age-Appropriate Pain Relief for Every Milestone

What works for a young child won’t work for a teenager. That’s why our pediatric FND and pain management team customizes techniques and tools for school-aged children and adolescents, based on their age, development, and comfort level.

FND & Pain Management Tailored to Every Age and Stage

Every child is different. Some may need strengthening and functional training. Others may benefit from relaxation techniques, sensory strategies, or medication support. We build care plans that meet your child where they are, so they can move forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

There’s no single solution that works for every child. The most effective approach often combines physical rehabilitation, emotional support, family education, and, when appropriate, medication. At Weisman Children’s, we work closely with each family to create a personalized plan that supports the child’s physical, emotional, and functional needs.

Yes! We understand how important it is for families to be together during this time. A parent or caregiver can stay overnight in our comfortable, family-friendly rooms, so you can be there for your child and feel supported throughout their stay.

87% of patients reported overall improvement on Patient Specific Functional Scale (PSFS) – (2022-2024 admissions)

82% of patients reported overall improvement on Functional Disability Inventory – (2022-2024 admissions)

Children don’t always express pain the same way adults do. It may show up as changes in mood, behavior, sleep, or activity levels. Because kids are still growing and developing, we use age-appropriate tools and techniques designed specifically for their bodies and brains.

Parents and caregivers are an essential part of the care team. While your child is expected to participate in therapy sessions independently, we keep you closely involved through regular updates and caregiver meetings. We also share practical strategies to support your child at home and work together toward meaningful, lasting progress. Your involvement plays a key role in building a strong foundation for recovery.

Our days include 4–6 hours of therapy, structured much like a school day and tailored to each patient’s individual needs. Sessions may include physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreation therapy, psychology, speech therapy when appropriate, and nutrition support as needed.

In our program, you’ll work with a team of specialists who focus on whole well-being—not just symptoms. Care may include:

  • Psychology: Addresses psychological needs, stress management, coping strategies, family therapy, and education
  • Physical Therapy: Improves physical function, decreases reliance on assistive devices, encourages use of painful body parts, and returns to typical activities
  • Occupational Therapy: Desensitization, stress management, and increases independence with ADLs and IADLs
  • Therapeutic recreation: Identifies effective strategies for coping with stress contributing to the pain response, and facilitates leisure activities

Searching For Relief from Chronic Pain, Teen Benefits From Pediatric Pain Program

Chronic pain, while something not widely understood by many, is something that people deal with on a daily basis. It can completely change or cripple someone to the point where they cannot physically do basic things that we all take for granted. This was the case for then 17-year-old Caleb, who for a long time was dealing with chronic pain every day. His pain continued to worsen, eventually relying on a walker to get himself around.
